You are going to read an article about Food Fraud. Answer the questions connected to the text.

  1. Give some examples of food fraud.- Mislabelled imported Chinese produce sold as ’Norfolk Honey’, selling battery eggs as free-range.
  2. Food fraud is not a new phenomenon. What did people do to play pranks on others in  the past? – For example bakers in the 18th century added mashed potatoes and sawdust to loaves.
  3. What is food fraud exactly? How is it committed? - Food is placed on the market with the intention of deceiving customers, that is the sale of unfit and harmful produce or mislabelled and misdescribed food or drink
  4. What are the common tricks normally used by food fraudsters? - Adulteration: Water is added to pump up volume. Cheap substitutes are used in premium products.
  5.  To what extent is it harmful? - In most cases the harm is to consumers’ wallet and sense of trust. In some cases it can result in serious illness or disability.
  6. Why does the fight against it seem to be a tilt at windmills? – There are tests, yet they are expensive and the number of cases prosecuted is likely to be a drop in the ocean.
